About Online Learning

Why should I take an online course?

Weigh the advantages and disadvantages according to your personal needs and schedule. How important is flexibility of schedule to you? How comfortable do you feel with computers? Do you feel more comfortable expressing yourself verbally or in writing? Take our quiz to see if you're ready to become an online learner.

Is there an instructor?

Most online courses at the JIBC have an instructor or facilitator involved in some way. Their roles include keeping in touch with learners, responding to e-mails, facilitating online discussions, reviewing progress and providing support.

What does it cost?

In general the tuition costs are the same as traditional courses. The main savings to you are time and travel costs.

Will I ever have to physically attend the JIBC?

Though it depends on the course and on the instructor, generally, the answer is no. However, to be sure, read carefully through the course description before registering.

Are online courses self-paced?

Again, it depends on the course. You may have assignments which require you to communicate with other students just as you would in a face-to-face course, and to stick to due dates for assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. Other courses can be completed at your own speed. Be sure to read the details of the course and timelines before registering.

Do I have to be experienced with computers to take online courses?

Although you don't have to be an expert, you should have basic computer skills such as word processing and some experience using the Internet.

Technical Questions

How do I log into my online course?

Go to http://access.jibc.ca and enter your user name and password. If you've forgotten this information, get in touch with the department that's delivering the course.

What are the computer requirements?

Computer requirements for online courses are listed elsewhere in our site.

What software does the JIBC use for online courses?

We use WebCT/Blackboard for nearly all of our online courses. It's a web-based course management system that lets students and instructors interact in a virtual classroom, or use online materials to complement face-to-face training. Each student has a unique user name and password, and only registered students can access course information. If you have more questions about WebCT/Blackboard, visit their website.

Is there a preferred browser for using WebCT/Blackboard?

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox work best with WebCT/Blackboard. For details on preferred browsers, visit the WebCT/Blackboard website.

Will I need to use a word processing program for written assignments?

Yes. In fact, you should get into the habit of typing all of your assignments, regardless of whether they are e-mails, discussion board postings, etc., in a word processing program like Microsoft Word. That way, you can check your work for spelling and grammar errors before submitting, and you can save them before sending.
