What's New?
Effective October 1, 2009, individuals and security businesses providing canine teams for the purpose of security guard service work in British Columbia must hold an authorization from the Registrar to continue offering this type of service post June 1, 2009.
In order to make application for the authorization to use dogs for security work, individuals must successfully complete the Validation Standards Competency test through the Justice Institute prior to June 1, 2009. Effective May 1, 2009 – Individuals or businesses can now contact the Justice Institute at the following email to apply to complete the Validation Standards Competency Test.
The Justice Institute of British Columbia Private Security Industry Canine Program administers the validation of the canine teams for licensed Security Worker and trained canine – based on the minimum performance standards developed by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General (Security Programs and Police Technology Division).
Validation Tests:
The validation tests are conducted by a qualified evaluator for the Justice Institute of BC will be administrating the testing and evaluation program. Security Dog Validation Standards handout.
The validation tests or required tasks are designed to determine the proficiency and reliability of the canine team in two distinct profiles:
- Protection (including Human Scent detection)
- Signature Odour Scent Work (Narcotic or Explosives).
