Welcome To PIIMIC
PIIMIC stands for Police Intervention In Mental Illness Crisis. PIIMIC is an information resource to enhance police intervention in their role as peace officers in civil psychiatric emergencies where the ill person needs medical attention, and no criminal offence is involved. The definitions, criteria and civil legal procedures that concern police in PIIMIC are based on the Mental Health Act of BC. (Mental health legislation in other provinces and territories is similar but there are important variations.) Medical information and practical advice in PIIMIC is focused mainly on police work.
PIIMIC is also aimed at helping others in the front lines of mental disorder: health professionals, caseworkers and families. PIIMIC contains information and orientation to help in assessing risk of endangerment in mental disorders. It contains practical recommendations to help in managing a crisis.
