Juveniles & Minors  (Legal Issues) - See Children and Teens in Glossary for early onset and prevalence of mental disorders. It is a common misconception that the Mental Health Act of BC does not apply to those under 19. It does apply, states Gerrit Clements, mental health legal expert of Victoria. He points out that Sec. 20 (Voluntary admissions) specifically references minors over and under 16 years of age. Other provisions of the Act apply to anyone - adults and minors alike. Minors can be certified as involuntary patients and the police have the same powers with respect to minors as they do with respect to adults. Children as young as 6 and 8 have been certified, says Mr. Clements. “Understandably, of course, everyone treads carefully here and will usually try to check with child protection authorities, but the jurisdiction is there.”  For services of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the website address is: www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/
