Interlibrary Loan
What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service agreement between libraries
to borrow material. This enables students, faculty and staff to
obtain library materials not owned by the Justice Institute of BC
Library. The Interlibrary Loan staff determine which libraries own
the required title and attempt to borrow the item from one of those
libraries.
Who is eligible?
JIBC faculty, staff and students registered in JIBC Certificate,
Diploma, or Degree Programs. ILL material will be mailed to online
students. All others need to pick up items at the JIBC New Westminster
campus.
What can be borrowed?
1. Books (except Course Manuals, Course Texts, Reference and Reserves)
2. Journal and newspaper articles
- In compliance with Copyright Legislation, you can copy up to
10% of a work or an entire single article from a work. We will
request only one article per work (issue) for a patron.
3. Videos/DVDs
- Please note that videos and DVDs will be borrowed via ILL ONLY
if they are to be used for research or JIBC classroom instruction.
Video/DVD requests made by a student must be directed to the JIBC
Library through their instructor.
Prior to requesting an ILL
1. Search our Library
Catalogue to see if the title of the book, journal, video, or
DVD is available at the JIBC Library.
- Additionally, if you are searching for an article, go to our
E-Journals
section and see if the JIBC Library has access to the journal
electronically.
- If so, you will be able to locate the full-text article, through
this link.
2. If you are unable to locate the title, send an e-mail
to the Library and include the following information:
- Book: Title, author, publisher, and date of publication.
- Journal or newspaper article: Article title, author, journal/newspaper
title, volume/issue numbers, date, and page numbers.
- Videos/DVDs: Title, producer/distributor, and year.
It is beneficial to send us as much information as possible to
assist us in locating the correct publication.
How soon will the request
arrive?
Depending on the availability of the item from the lending institution,
the item may arrive anytime from 3 days to several weeks.
How much does this service
cost?
1. There is no direct charge to the requestor for this service
for the first 15 items borrowed per year. The JIBC Library will
absorb the initial charges.
- Once this number has been reached, a charge of $10.00 per item
requested will be levied.
2. The requestor is financially responsible for any costs incurred,
through loss or damage of the borrowed material.

How do I pickup and return
the material?
1. You will be called to pick up the item from the Library HOLD
shelf (Circulation Desk) as soon as it arrives.
2. On the cover of book, video or DVD, a date due slip will be
attached. Please return the item by this date, so that we can mail
it back to the lending library.
- Should you require the material for a longer period, please
contact Rob Hooft (604.528.5598)
to request a renewal. Please note, some libraries do not accommodate
renewals of ILL material.
3. If you requested an article, it is yours for personal use, no
further copying is permitted.
- If you are an instructor wanting to make multiple copies for
a class, please contact the Library to ensure that the Access
Copyright Log sheet is completed.
4. Return all books, videos and DVDs directly to the JIBC Library.
