Withdrawals
Students are required to give 7 days withdrawal notice to receive a full refund or transfer credit.  Full attendance is required to receive credit for courses.

Refunds
JIBC course registration fees are refundable, subject to a $25 administration fee, provided we receive notification at least seven calendar days before the course start date. If you wish to cancel or reschedule your final assessment, you will be charged a cancellation/transfer fee of 50 per cent of the regular fee.

Transfers
You may transfer from one course to another up to seven calendar days before the start date of your course. Transfers are subject to an administrative charge of $25.

Cancellations
The JIBC reserves the right to cancel courses. A full refund of tuition fees will be issued for courses cancelled by the JIBC. In every case, as much advance notice as possible will be provided. The JIBC is not responsible for participants’ expenses (such as airline or hotel reservations) if a course must be cancelled. We truly regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Learner substitutions
Substitutions are welcome as long as the substituting learner has completed the course prerequisites. Please inform the registration office ahead of time.

Instructor substitutions
Occasionally an instructor substitution is required. We regret that we are unable to reimburse learners for any costs associated with a decision to drop a course as a result of an instructor substitution.

The course is full - how can I get in / should I get on the waitlist?

Yes, subject to an administrative fee, Registration will hold your payment. You must notify them of your intention and follow through with registering for the next scheduled session, when it is open to registration.

Do I need to be enrolled in a certificate to take courses?
You can take courses without being a certificate student.  If you would like to complete a certificate, you need to fill in a certificate enrolment form before you can register for the Final Assignment (FMGMT500, ALCR299) or Practicum (INDC190).

How do I enroll in a Certificate?
You complete a certificate enrolment form and return it to the Centre for Leadership.

Why should I enroll in a Certificate?
Becoming a certificate student will help you:

  • gain the leadership or instructional skills you need to excel in your current career;
  • enhance your career prospects with a recognized post-secondary credential;
  • choose the amount of time you have for taking courses and the speed at which you learn and integrate the new skills;
  • join a community of learners through which you will receive valuable resources and advance notice about learning opportunities;
  • access the JIBC’s extensive collection of books, periodicals, and videos including a wide variety of online journals and articles, courtesy of the JIBC virtual library; and
  • celebrate your success with friends and family when you graduate at the JIBC convocation ceremony.

What experience do I need to enroll in a certificate?
You don’t need to have any specific experience, although many of our students are working in the field in some capacity.

How much does a certificate program cost?
You enroll in and pay for courses individually, so the costs of the programs vary.  You can check the cost of individual courses online or contact the Program Planner leadership@jibc.ca or 604.528.5665 for more information.

How long does it take to complete a certificate? What happens if I don’t complete my certificate on time?
We recommend that you complete your certificate within three years because we want you to have the knowledge you need to succeed on your final assignment or practicum and also there can be changes to curriculum over time.  We understand that sometimes this isn’t possible.  If you need to extend your term, please contact the Program Planner at leadership@jibc.ca or call 604.528-5665.

Will my credits be transferrable to another institution?
Credit equivalency is recognition of equivalent education earned at another post-secondary institution or learning organization.

Our Foundations of Effective Management and Leadership Certificate has a transfer credit agreement in place with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Call 604.528.5633 or e-mail leadership@jibc.ca for details.

We have a transfer credit agreement in place with Vancouver Community College’s Provincial Instructor Diploma Program. Earn 50% of the VCC diploma. There is also an agreement in place to enable graduates of the Instructor Development Certificate to enter the Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education (CACE) program at the University of Victoria.

If the institution you are looking for isn’t listed here, you can check with the specific educational institution you are transferring to regarding their guidelines for transfer of credits.  Please contact the Program Coordinator at 604.528.5633 or leadership@jibc.ca for more details.

Can I get credit for my experience or previous education so I don’t have to take all the courses?

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process for granting credit in a post-secondary program based upon what you know and what you can do, no matter where or how you gained your knowledge and skills.

The PLAR process is an active partnership between the JIBC and the learner, and involves documenting your learning in such a way that we can assess it for credit.

Download the PLAR form.

Are there any student loans or grants that I can apply for?

Can I get a tax deduction/receipt for the course I am taking?
