Why Take These Courses?
The STATIC-99R and STABLE-2007/ACUTE-2007 are widely used actuarial risk and needs scales for the assessment of sexual offenders and the probability of sexual and violent recidivism.
Extensive research has demonstrated that structured, actuarial risk/needs measures are more accurate than unstructured professional judgment for predicting recidivism risk and providing supervision for sexual offenders. Given that the risk factors and case management for sexual offenders are not the same as for other criminal offenders, specialized risk/needs assessments are critical when evaluating this population of offenders.

Course Details
These web-based courses are offered part time through distance study, consisting of self-study, group interaction and online instruction. Participants may download all course materials. Each course is self-paced and guided by a trained professional working in the field of sex offender risk/needs assessment. Overall study time for each course is 21 hours over a four-week period.
- STATIC-99R: Sex Offender Risk Assessment (SOAP105)
This new online training is an update to our successful STATIC-99 course. Participants will learn how to score and interpret the STATIC-99R with adult male sexual offenders. STATIC-99R (including STATIC-99) is the most extensively used actuarial risk scale for the assessment of sexual offenders. The STATIC-99R contains ten (10) items, which can be combined to give group estimates of the probability of sexual and violent recidivism. The STATIC-99R is widely applicable and can be scored using easily retrieved demographic and criminal history information.
The STATIC-99 was developed by R. Karl Hanson, PhD, and David Thornton, PhD. Dr. Hanson delivers this online training to you using videotaped segments, and he is joined by Dr. Karl Williams, one of the certified trainers for STATIC-99R. An online moderator experienced with sex offender risk assessments will also help guide you through the course.
- STABLE-2007/ACUTE-2007: Sex Offender Needs Assessment (SOAP106)
This course discusses the background and utilization of the STABLE-2007/ACUTE-2007 sex offender risk assessment measures. It provides both detailed instruction and practical experience in the use of these risk/needs assessment tools. The course prepares criminal justice personnel and other professionals to estimate a sexual offender’s criminogenic factors and employ stable and acute measures in case supervision and management. In its discussion of risk factors, the course also explores the major variables that have been found to underlie sexual re-offence.
The STABLE-2007/ACUTE-2007 was developed by R. Karl Hanson, PhD, and Andrew J.R. Harris, PhD. Dr. Harris delivers this online training to you using videotaped segments enhanced by an online moderator who is experienced with sex offender needs assessments and supervision.
