President's Message
Welcome to the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s (JIBC), Canada’s leading public safety educator. Since its inception in 1978, the JIBC has evolved to fulfill the strategic vision of its founders as a fully functioning post-secondary institution, providing education and training for justice and public professionals, here in Canada and around the world.
Students at the JIBC benefit from the Institute’s commitment to adult learning principles. Our small classes are led by expert faculty who are active in their field and provide real-world examples to their students. We emphasize hands-on learning, built on a foundation of essential academic theory. To encourage teamwork and shared understanding, our programs often bring students together from across disciplines.
We are currently in the process of renewing our Strategic Plan, which will guide the activities of the institute over the period 2010 - 2013. Our focus on credentialing will provide justice & public safety professionals opportunity to earn credits towards JIBC diploma and degrees – the first of which, a Bachelor of Fire & Safety Studies, was launched early in 2006. A new degree in Emergency and Security Management has been approved and a diploma program launched in 2009 – making the JIBC the first Canadian post-secondary institution to offer a program that combines education in security, emergency management and business fundamentals.
We are also more actively engaged in applied research to inform public policy and decision-making in justice and public safety fields. An Office of Applied Research has been established with a mandate ”to conduct Applied Research with practitioners, policy makers, stakeholders or service users to investigate justice and public safety issues or problems on how to make the community safe.”
All of these initiatives contribute to ensuring that we fulfill our mandate to provide the applied education that our students and clients require to ensure they are prepared to make an immediate and effective contribution to keeping their workplaces and communities safe.
I invite you to continue with your virtual visit, or to come see us at one of our campuses in British Columbia and learn more about the JIBC’s role in making communities here in BC, across Canada and around the world, safer places to live.
